Files with extension ISO are the standard for images of CD/DVD. Such files are merely a container similar to rar and zip files known to all.

To work with these ISO files have three options :

OPTION 1. Mount the ISO file as a CD/DVD:
You can view the contents of an ISO file like a CD/DVD it were, for this we have the following options:
In Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, there are free alternatives to use an ISO file as a CD/DVD in question. The most recommended for its simplicity is WinCDEmu ( ). This utility allows you to mount the files and view them in "My Computer" as if a CD/DVD is involved.

In Windows 8 just double click or click the right mouse button on the file extension ISO and select "Mount". After this a new drive appears in "My Computer".

In Mac OS X just double click the mouse on the file ISO to a new drive will appear on the desktop with the file contents.

In Linux you have two options to mount ISO image file disk:

From a command line/shell:
  1. Create a directory (mount point) where you will mount the image: #> mkdir/mnt/iso (or where you want to create it)
  2. Add or load the loop module to the kernel: #> modprobe loop
  3. Mount the image: #> mount-t iso9660-o loop file.iso /mnt/iso

From the GUI:

Some distributions incorporate some sort of GUI utility that automatically mounts ISO images. For example, in Ubuntu 12 is sufficient to place the cursor on the icon representing the ISO image file and click with the mouse on the shortcut menu will click on Open with assembler applications, other distributions can use the Application manager.

OPTION 2. Burn ISO images to CD/DVD (required for installations of operating systems):
Should have a CD/DVD we can record the contents of the ISO image file to a disc.

In Windows XP and Vista should use a third party utility to record files ISO to disk. A free utility, simple and recomended is FreeISOBurner ( ).

In Windows 7 and Windows 8 just click with the right mouse button and select the ISO file "Burn Disc Image". After that select the CD/DVD drive, and introduce the new disc will click on the "Record" button .

Mac OS X has "Disk Utility" tool which allows direct recording of images ISO. To use it go to "Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility", we will open with a mouse click and then we click on the "Images" menu. Once deployed the menu, select "Save". A window where we can choose the file opens ISO, once selected with the mouse will click on the "Record" button.

OPTION 3. Extract the contents of the ISO file:
ISO files are opened by most applications file compression 7-Zip, Winrar and Winzip. You can extract the contents of the file ISO to a folder and from there launch the installation of the application.

With 7-Zip (recommended) just click with the right mouse button on ISO file, and select "7-Zip> Extract files ..." context menu. In the next window specify the folder where you want to extract the contents of the ISO and do "OK".

From Winrar, simply go to "File> Open File" menu, and select the file ISO we want to extract. After we click "Extract in", specify the name of the folder where you want to extract the ISO and do "OK".

From Winzip, simply go to the menu "File> Open My Computer", and select the ISO file you want to extract. After we click "Unzip in" and navigate to the folder where we want to extract the ISO and then we click "Unzip".
