Well I made a test with a new fresh Windows 10 1909 on two different devices. After installing Remove Windows Defender 4.0 they all are not able to download the latest security updates anymore. They all are giving me the same error messages. It all is connected with this one little program. And if you try to reinstall Windows 10 with Inplace Update you get Net Error-messages constantly, many programs are not working anymore (for example Adguard, Windows Firewall Control...). In Windows Features Net 4.8 and Net 3.5 Framework are not active anymore and can't be reinstalled. In this case you have to make a complete new Windows 10 installation.

I had luck that my main computer had a Recovery point that solved the problem and spared me many hours of work to reinstall the whole system. But I had to reinstall Windows 10 on two laptops that had no Recovery points to save the day.

But at least I found out that the program "Defender Control v1.6" works flawlessly. :)

That is simply not true! The script cannot be installed. It removes only files relevant to WD. Removes nothing related to updates. I use it before for a long period of time without any issue! Also read the comments to see what other members says! You did or use other tweakers/scripts that in combination with this one probably caused your situation! Not this script surely!

Both MMIKEE87 and fantom gives you excellent explanation why to remove WD!

Because this paranoid "malware protector" will not protect user from the real threats. Only from false positive! Plus it consumes cumulative around 600-800 MB with all working services in the background? What for? Still to be vulnerable. Plus it collects and send user informations online to Sky..., etc...

And most important thing, removing Windows Defender will never ever break updates or anything on Windows 10. It can be removed safely and nothing negative will happen to user machine! All updates like CU, SSU, Feature, .NET, and Flash will always work! CMD commands like sfc /scannow and /ScanHealth always gives no integrity violation or no component corruption! It will not kill Firewall but that component/services can be removed too.
my windows update is also not working after i removed defender ... windows 10 pro 1909 version.before it was working fine.

Updates works for me, but this is very useful because even with Defender disabled thru group policy, it was still, STILL active, yeah good job microsoft for embedding a piece of software nobody uses. This resolved my issue and its perfect to have. Thanks so much! :3

You and @mironicus have the same situation. Find out what connects you except version 1909 (what apps did you use(d), what you did before or what do you have on PC, other specification, etc....) and maybe we can find the pattern/reason why this script case an issue for you two. To many tweaks can cause headaches. Until then good luck and cheers...

Same reason why i ask on other thread /Yamichsot..../
After win10 build 1804 /not sure now but i will check tomorrow/, registry keys are on "other places" and the wd complete have "guardian" ...which do not allow changes in registry if windows is up and running.
i know solution but it is not for standart users or novice to do it. w10 1804 - 1903 - 1909 -20xx have many changes in registry.

It could be that RemoveDefender 4.0 is not working properly on newer W10 builds...
DHJohns created this pkg in Mar 2019... His "start.exe" and CMD scripts were created at that time...

It works perfectly on my Windows10 LTSC 2019_17763_1809 PC's... I performed the current Apr 2020 .CU & .SSU updates on 2 of my PC's today without issue...

Exactly my point! I believe that all problem starts when M$ decide to change positions in registry. egg. the registry keys which we need to change in build 1804/1809 have same positions in registry, but which was totally different then in 1903/1909. In latest version You can`t stop mentioned services even as admin. Adding DWORD`s have no any effects because of new services called Tamper Protection which between other thing also lock NTFS permission on system files. That was reason Why You cant simply delete *.exe files of mentioned services/programs, or rename that folders, or disable it in registry. Disabling tamper is stil alowed in 1909, and I do not try it in newer Build, but I expect/presume that M$ shall lock this option very soon.
Now, to disable it You need some WinPE or Linux live distro, run it and then rename or delete several files. Or go true registry in safe mode using hive function then import it back.
But, with first next update, Windows will "correct" this

Im on Win10 build 19663 version 2004

Can You do me a favor Please? Or anybody with Win10 build 19663 version 2004 or newer
Go to Start/Settings, scroll down, click Update & Security
Click Windows Security in the left panel then Click Virus & Thread Protection
Scroll down to virus & threat protection settings, and click Manage settings
Scroll down to Tamper Protection, and try to toggle it off.
Can You do it?

This in my opinion is one of the best programs for Windows 10.
You ether Love Windows Defender or you despise it.
This tool will save Hair, Coffee cups, the cat and My marriage
Thank you for this tool.
I've never had any issues with WD. I know Microsoft forces it on us. However, lots of companies force things like this when you use or buy their product/s.

With that said, I know it chews through a lot of resources. So, if I remove it from my daily driver, what do I replace it with?

I was using Symantec Endpoint Protection up until about a year ago and it worked. Is this the best replacement?

Should I be worried that future updates will be broken due to the removal of Windows Defender?

Thanks...

Personally, I wouldn't do it... When I did it I installed in it's place and within weeks I was infected and had to wipe my drive(s) and reinstall everything! It took me months to get back to my original configuration.

I always believe that good and valid information makes us take better decisions, rather than believing unsubstantiated things over the internet. I don't mean it as a personal insult to anyone but we do live in the age of information and testing data and all it takes is a bit of research for such a crucial part that PCs are to our lives.

Let's start with some facts:
The best protection is... logic, reason and common sense. Shady websites that promise the world (free porn, free hacks, free access to premium services, one-click cracking of Facebook/Instagram accounts, etc by downloading anything) most likely have a virus in them. STOP DOWNLOADING everything you find without cross-checking. That's 90% of the protection right there. It's one of the reasons I like this web site, it enforces the uploaders to virus check the files before uploading.

Windows Defender is NOT bad at all. It's not the best either but it ranks pretty high up there. Don't take my word for it tho visit a TESTING site that performs AV tests per month and see for yourself. Most other sites that do AV comparisons, they do them over the PDF specs and never really test them on a PC to actually compare and of course others are paid tests so... yeah.
We are not allowed to post links (and for a good reason) so...
PPr1lQ.png

You will notice they don't just measure the protection but also the system load and recourse use for low and hi-end PCs among other things. Spend a few minutes to compare the various AV software and make an informed decision.

That being said and if one knows what they are doing, the solution provided here is very good and thx @Mirkec. Because I personally want to squeeze every single Hz and byte out of my PC I don't use any AV at all (but then again I know what I'm downloading). ANY AntiVirus including Defender uses system resources, some more than others and with solutions such as those some people might benefit.

Remember the scope of the script. It doesn't just disable, it removes/erases defender of your disk. Use your heads. If you want to disable and NOT removed there are other ways/scripts. Check the date of the post and the Windows version is supposed to be made for and supports. A newer version of windows might not work but all it takes is googling a bit to see whats going on.

Also, take a snapshot (system restore) and if things go south for your installation, you can always revert and go back. There are no 100% working guarantees in this world.

IMHO Symantec Endpoint Protection is better than the WD.
You can use this tool also:
It is a reliable and better choice if you asking me. It does in a more proper way (no integrity violation or corrupted store components and updates works 100%). It removes WD components while this script deletes files and reg entries for the same purpose).

Personally, I wouldn't do it... When I did it I installed in its place and within weeks I was infected and had to wipe my drive(s) and reinstall everything! It took me months to get back to my original configuration.
I am sorry dude I do not want to be rush but Avast is not a good AV. Everyone should know that. Same as Avira. When members replying to me that it's Avira finds trojan in my threads, I suddenly get diarrhea. Use ESET, Kaspersky, BitDefender, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware (they found recently that Super have a backdoor...). That's the real deal and with them, the user will never have any problem.

as @Cyler says: "The best protection is... logic, reason and common sense." I am not using either of them. I'm 100% AV free from last July even if I have a genuine key for ESET which is btw my number one choice.

Finally, even if you disable WD completely via registry and GPO they still consume 100-200 MB of RAM. I tested that a lot and that is true. Services still work/suck/leech machine's resources in the background. Unbelievable.
