Have you disabled virtual memory (paging file)?
Are you using a custom OS with virtual memory disabled?
If your app is exceeding your physical memory (RAM) limit, then it will crash if you do not have a paging file.

Are your drivers up to date, particularly your graphics drivers?

Yes; I learned about the paging file with ZBrush and the previous version of PS ran fine. Drivers are up to date thanks to some brilliant software I downloaded from this site (IoBit Driver Booster); I install my Nvidia drivers from their site just to be sure.
BUT, currently, it appears that it's all academic as it's working now.

It just crashed on me whilst I was thinking but not doing any actual work at the time which is a bit weird.
BTW, does your install reopen files that were open when PS crashes?
PS always did that but now it no longer appears to be a feature (the last 3 or 4 versions I've used no longer do it. Seems like a rather essential feature to lose (Unless I'm missing something, but it used to do it automatically - nothing necessary to check in preferences or anything like that.

I couldn't say because I can't remember the last time that Photoshop crashed. I've had the Camera Raw plug-in misbehave a few times,but, given how much I use, it's not something that bothers me.
