Review
Victoria for Windows is a robust HDD information and diagnostic utility. The application is designed for diagnostics, research, speed testing, and minor repair of hard drives (HDD), SSD drives, memory cards, and any other drives in the Windows operating system. Since Victoria is an HDD information and diagnostic utility at its core, it has the same functionality as its counterpart for DOS. But it also has some benefits, like low CPU load, more convenient user interface, multitasking, and multithreading.
A powerful HDD surface scanner is built into the program, which allows users to diagnose the drive for the presence of bad sections, floating defects, and interface errors. Victoria for Windows can test most drives at top speed, regardless of their type. A unique feature of the scanner is the use of special algorithms for automatically setting timeouts and block size, which makes it possible to check both slow and fast disks effectively.
The program can work in two modes:
- API mode (work through the Windows programming interface): It allows direct access to any drive, including the system drive, without disrupting Windows. API mode allows the user to test any HDD, CD, SSD, FDD, Flash drives installed in the system, regardless of the interface - SCSI, SAS, PCI-e, USB, or FireWire, as well as virtual disks-containers created by some data encryption programs.
- PIO mode: for professional use only. The mode allows users to access IDE/SATA drives bypassing Windows directly through the I/o ports. It only works on 32-bit systems. If the user does not know what this mode is for, then do not use it.
Attention: Some USB drives are not supported by the program. In this case, it is possible to test the surface, but it is not possible to view the SMART parameters and the full passport. On the USB controller "USB 3.0 Data cable" from the Seagate FreeAgent kit, as well as on the WD Passport-there may be problems with the use of a password. Experimenting with them is not recommended!
- Designed for testing, performance measurement, maintenance of drives HDD, SSD, flash drives with interfaces IDE, SATA, USB, SAS, SCSI, etc., within the standard management;
- Daily disk health monitoring, speed measurement, smart drive parameters, and SMART error logs;
- Test laboratories for testing computer "hardware" and writing reviews;
- Workshops on the repair of PC and storage, displays the input and output control;
- Solving some problems with drives, defects, noise, passwords;
- Information erasing without the possibility of recovery (e.g., before selling the drive);
- Read the disk passport and display technical information about the drive (model, serial number, version, features, etc.);
- HDD acoustic noise level control, if it supports it;
- View S.M.A.R.T. parameters of the drive, quick assessment of its status by pseudographic scales and by the status register. Including viewing hidden attributes of IBM/HITACHI/Toshiba 3.5 drives;
- Run the built-in HDD SMART-control tests and their passing;
- View, analyze, research, and record smart drive logs, including modern 48-bit logs;
- Drive configuration management via Device Configuration Overlay-special non-volatile memory in which user can disable unnecessary functions, enable previously disabled or change the available volume;
- Surface testing by verification, reading, and writing, with counting and displaying addresses of defective blocks;
- Testing on the list of areas, the numbering of sectors on the list;
- Linear, non-linear, and random read speed measurement with HDD;
- Build a fast and complete speed graph;
- Test drives for the presence of distortion of the data when receiving and transmitting - optional DDD;
- HDD shaft speed measurement;
- Hiding surface defects by remapping sectors from the reserve (remap) on any of the read tests;
- Measurement of hard drive performance (benchmark-function).
- Measuring HDD head positioning speed and sector access time (random read/write);
- View the contents of sectors with the ability to edit;
- Clearing the disk (or part of it) of information - " low-level formatting";
- Manage security options: set password on USB HDD / SSD, remove password;
- Ability to stop and start the spindle motor USB / SAS HDD. Putting SSD to sleep;
- HDD head positioning test (similar to how the OS does it during intensive operation), in order to identify the reliability and thermal stability of the disk subsystem of the PC;
- View information about logical HDD partitions with partition boundaries (only MBR format is supported so far).

Note: In this version, settings for Common are disabled in the Settings Common menu and the use of 12-byte SCSI commands in the Settings APImenu. Users can turn on these features themselves after the program installation.
- Victoria with Russian, English, and Ukrainian translation;
- S.M.A.R.T. technology HDD/SSD in Russian and Ukrainian;
- Supports drives with M.2/U.2 NVMe interface;
- Through the log menu, now not the log itself opens, but the folder with it. The log itself is still opened by double-clicking on the window using the default Windows text editor;
- An attempt was made to fix a bug with the freezing of some HGST models on versions 5.34 and 5.35. For this purpose, the algorithm for detecting "drives-werewolves" has been changed, and the likelihood of WD technological commands getting into HGST has been significantly reduced;
- Rewritten procedure for detecting real HGST. Now it works via USB too. Even on bridges that block registers;
- I got an Apple computer, wherein the GPT partition table, - CHS is not equal to 0/0/2 and the size is FFFFFFE instead of FFFFFFFF. Victoria's GPT parser did not recognize such a table. I had to finalize the program;
- Fixed bug in the detection of WDxxxx-22xST0 and some others (old-type drives), which the program considered Seagates;
Improved recognition of "real" Samsung under the guise of Seagate (but so far this is used only inside the program); - It turned out that SCT-Ext commands do not work on old WDs, which is why their temperature was not displayed on the passport page. It was possible to switch the SCT mode manually in the settings, but I fixed it in the code;
- Fixed a bug with knocking down the size of passport columns after PCI-scan in PIO;
- At the request, it is possible NOT to change the working environment if the list of API devices has been updated (and it is also updated when USB drives are reconnected). The option is enabled by setting the checkbox on the "Settings" - "API" - "Do not reset settings when updating the list of devices" tab and is disabled by default. When this checkbox is activated, the following changes occur in the program behavior when updating the list of API devices and reconnecting USB drives, compared to previous versions: 1. The verification-read-write switch in the surface scan is not reset to the "read" position. 2.The SMART table and the log list are not cleared. 3. The HEX editor is not initialized. 4. End LBA is not restored to the maximum;
- In the previous version (5.35), the "interface check" function was activated. It soon became clear that some USB bridges "spoil the holiday" by displaying solid zeros instead of the data written to the buffer. Well, the program for the discrepancy - cursed. As usual, this is another joke from Seagate and their proprietary USB-bridge "Backup +". In the new version, the algorithm is improved and distinguishes such situations from real interface faults;
- The logic of the buttons for obtaining a "clean" and "extended" passport has been put in order: additional functions, such as SCT temperature, detection of "werewolves" and SMR drives, have been switched to the "EXT" button, and the ability to NOT send to the drive has been returned to the "Passport" button nothing extra. However, to preserve compatibility and habits - the old version is left by default, which can be changed to a new one in the "Settings" - "Passport" menu;
- Fixed bugs that could worsen the stability of the program when performing various actions.

- "Added a filter to CD-ROM devices so that their letters do not appear mistakenly on the LIST of physical API devices. In order to work with optical discs and their emulators in Victoria, the user can install the "Show Logical Discs" tick in the Settings menu.

- Added definition of werewolf hard drives. After the merger of technologies from Western Digital and HGST, dozens of models appeared on sale with the same article number (model name on the sticker and in the passport), but different contents. In fact, these are WD drives with an HGST sticker and vice versa. An experimental algorithm has been added to the Victoria program that allows you to find out the true "stuffing" of WD and HGST drives, regardless of the name in their passport. When "werewolves" are found, a message is displayed in the log;
- Improved detection of SMR technology on WD HDDs, including the new WD Passport/Elements;
- Minor bugs fixed.

SMR (Shingled Recording Magnetic)is an information storage technology that usually leads to a deterioration in HDD parameters, and is therefore often concealed by manufacturers. The program makes a GOOD definition of this feature by special algorithms that do not guarantee 100% result. The tile-colored SMR indicator is lit under the drive's passport panel. - Improved recognition of the Seagate/Samsung STxxx series to more accurately display the S.M.A.R.T. on them;
- Fixed a glitch of the reference system, which sometimes did not switch tabs.

- Added GPT section table analyzer. In order to take a more careful approach to the screw under study, which may be defects - the procedure is simplified compared to the system: the primary GPT header is not analyzed, the control amounts are not calculated, only the first copy of the table is processed, and the transition to the second copy is manual;

- Most settings are now recorded in the INI file as soon as the settings panel closes. This is for better compatibility with the trey folding mode;

- An arbitrary sector template (512 bytes) has been added to the disk in record/erasure mode. To do this, you need to select"Record" on the test panel, remove the "number" tick, then open the buffer viewer and press the"Load" button. In the conversation that opens, choose a pre-prepared 512-byte file with a template. The file should have an extension .bin. To reset the pattern (return to the zeros record) you need to set and re-remove the"number" tick;
- Added SMART attribute 167 for SSD OS;
- The HEX editor has chosen to encode the display of symbols to facilitate the exploration of the contents of the drives. Unfortunately, it is compatible with 4.xx versions only for reading, due to the features of the Unicode;
- Added a switch to disable the random reading timer on the "testing" panel;
- The drop-down Scan button menu is now triggered by the click of the left mouse button. The last option, when the left button did not work, caused a lot of hatred of users, I was taken it all the brain, and the psyche will never be the same... ;
- The disk name(irrelevant since Windows 98) has been replaced by the GPT second copy selection switch;
- A switch has been added to include the name of the screenshot and the drive serial in the file name, as was the case in the 4.xx versions;
- Fixed an error that did not restore the locked sleep mode after the scan ended;
- Fixed some spelling errors;
- Fixed the error: when user put the scan on pause - user could not scroll the card slider;
- The glitch was fixed: when the HEX-editor's tab was opened, the"Get Passport" button appeared on the section table button, even in API mode (originally this inscription was needed for PIO to prevent someone else's table from being inserted into the screw, as Pio's passport is blocked);
- Fixed a serious glitch HEX-editor: when trying to write in it in Russian letters (probably it was with other languages in the Unicode encoding) - there was a "range check error";
- Fixed an error in the section table viewer when the section size was larger than the size of the drive. At the same time, the machine was displayed in the form of a negative number;
- Fixed the flaw: When the user chose a logical disk as a testable, a user could press the Section Table button in the editor. Since the section does not have a table - there was different nonsense. Blocked;
- In connection with the change of residence of the author - changed the city in the section with self-promotion. The name of the site has not changed HDD.by and there are no plans to change it! Recently, clones of the official website of the program "Victoria" on other domains began to appear;
- The Mastercard payment card number has been changed in the project assistance section;
- Added the cryptocurrency wallet Ethereum in the help section.
System requirements:
OS: Microsoft Windows® XP (32-bit) (Under 9x program works only through ports, and noticeably worse);
Windows® Windows® 7, Windows® 8, Windows® 8.1, Windows® 10 (both 32 & 64-bit). However, in these systems, there will be some functionality limitations related to excessive protection of Windows 7-10 which restrict direct disk access. On Windows x64-performance is maintained, except for PIO mode;
CPU: not lower than Intel Pentium III (P4 from 2GHz is recommended);
RAM: 64MB or above;
SVGA graphics card (graphics mode not lower than 800x600. 1280x1024 recommended);
Keyboard, mouse;
Require administrator rights to work without restrictions.

Except I wiped my OS off it & the clone I did got corrupt, didn't it
