Yes, this is what I'm always doing, for many years, after any edit of hosts file I change it to read only and it's safe. Never ever problems with it. :giggle:

To add the host file to exclude:
edit host file and add the MB host block from readme
do a scan and MB will flag the host file
check it and add to exclude
done

This is exactly how I did it. Modify the hosts file, let Malwarebytes detect it and click "Ignore Always"
No file permissions need be modified.

I waited until today to answer you waiting for MB's behavior.
So far MB has not broken the read-only attribute, so I think it is a simple solution and it works.
In this specific case I will not change the access permissions of System, but it is a good idea for other programs that can break the attributes of the files.
Thank you very much for your suggestion.
Put a etc folder shortcut on the desktop before installing MB.That should work!

@Northboun, @Baronstragen thank you for your suggestion, excuse me but this thread was not notifying me and I just now see your responses. :giggle:
It seems currently MB no longer messes with the HOST file.
I modified the file, scanned it with MB and it doesn't detect malicious elements.
I even added this line 127.0.0.1 www.malwarebytes.com trying to get it to detect it, but it continued without detecting anything and without adding the # before the hosts.
Issue solved!

Actually in my company where I work, they have specific version of MB and Avast. I can see that in my PC for example it does not scan host via MB but Avast does. So I checked our group policies and there is a clause which mentions that hosts and few IIC files to be excluded by design. Probably specific to my company, but that is how it is here too. Luckily I use Nod32 only. :)
