Review
HDD Low-Level Format Tool is a utility for low-level hard disk drive formatting, with support for SATA, IDE or SCSI hard disks, as well as removable drives of any size. Low-Level Formatting refers to the exact process of disk formatting operation. It builds the physical format by assigning the location where the data is kept on the disk. The HDD Low-Level Format Tool is an application that does or at least comes close to doing this particular thing. The real Low-Level Format is done in the factory, while tools such as this one only do zero-fills.

HDD Low-Level Format Tool re-initializes the hard drive to its factory configuration by writing a zero byte to its every location on the disk. It's entirely and irreversibly erases all data (if present) from the user's disk. The main reason to do this is the attempt to revitalize the infected or corrupted hard drive. Low-Level Formatting also hides the bad sectors to create a clean and error-free surface for user data.

The interface of the application is quite basic and straightforward. It provides details of the selected device such as model, firmware revision, serial number, or buffer size as welS.M.A.R.T.cal parameters, security, or queuing features. For drives supporting S.M.A.R.T. technology, the user will get info on "read error rate"', "spin uptime," "power-on time," or "power cycles." Hardware temperature can also be checked in this particular section.

HDD Low-Level Format Tool can work with numerous devices, including flashcards, presuming users already have a card reader, as well as with USB and Firewire drives. It supports most hard I.B.MI.B.M.manufacturers such as Western Digital, SeagateM.M.B.Hitachi, Maxtor, Samsung, IBM, Toshiba, or Quantum. Being limited to just 50 MB/s, it might takeT.T.B. while for the process to finish, so it takes approximately 12 hours for a 2 TB drive to be processed.

However, the user needs to make sure the target device is first plugged in, because the application is not able to detect new drives automatically, nor is it fitted with a refresh option. The bottom line is that HDD Low-Level Format Tool is the application to use in case of user experience constant data corruption, virus intrusion within the MBR, or bad sectors. It can surely get user malfunctioning to drive up and running yet again as long as the encountered problems have nothing to do with its mechanical integrity.

WARNING: After running the low-level format tool, the whole disk surface will be erased. Data restoration is impossible after using this utility!

  • Supported interfaces: S-ATA (SATA), IDE (E-IDE), SCSI, SAS, USB, FIREWIRE;
  • Big drives (LBA-48) are supported;
    [*I.BI.B.M.pported Manufacturers: Maxtor, Hitachi, Seagate, Samsung, Toshiba, Fujitsu, IBM, Quantum, Western Digital, and almoS.D. any other not listed here;
  • Supports low-level formatting of FLASH cards (SD, MMC, MemoryStick, andS.A.S.S.A.S.ctFlashS.SS.S.D.sing a card-reader;
  • Erase and Low-Level Format a SATA, IDE, SAS, SCSI or SSD hard diskS.S.D.rive;
  • Work with any USB and FIREWIRE external drive enclosures as well as SD, MMC, MemoryStick and CompactFlash media;
  • An option to quickly wipe partitions and MBR data is available.

What is new in version 4.40:
  • The tool now displays volume letters associated with physical drives;
  • Serial number detection should now be finally fixed as well as an inability to lock storage dS.A.S.S.A.S. under S.SS.S.D.tain circumstances;
  • Erase and Low-Level Format a SATA, IDE, SAS, SCSI or SSD hard diskS.S.D.rive;
  • Work with any USB and FIREWIRE external drive enclosures as well as SD, MMC, MemoryO.SO.S.ck, and CompactFlash media.

System requirements:
OS: Microsoft Windows® XP, Windows® Vista, Windows® 7, Windows® 8, Windows® 8.1, Windows® 10 (both 32 & 64-bit);
Windows® Server 2003, Windows® Server 2008, Windows® Server 2008R2.

This is a neat little utility. Apparently on the off chance you choose to do this with a hard drive from the pre-90's era it can actually break the drive. There's a video by Nostalgia Nerd on youtube that explains this process better than I can. Thanks for the post !

One note here. First of all, thank you @Mirkec for this tool but I think people should understand what this is and where one should use it or not.

First, Low-level format <> zero filling. Those 2 are different in concept.
Second, HDD <> SSD (we all know that).

The low-level format applies to magnetic disks and is used to place discrete marks onto the analog surface or to say differently, set the sector/track boundaries. Sometimes those get demagnetized over time and a low-level format refreshes them. There are no analog elements in memory chips such as the SSD disks use. Those are emulated by the SSD controller.

Now the "bad" news. No one can low level format SATA/IDE disks anymore. The low-level format used to be a thing in the old MFM disk drives (8088/8086/286 era) but since IDE and now SATA got introduced, the low-level format is not possible for the average user and for sure not from within windows. By design, modern disc drives maintain spare sectors for reallocation purposes in case they find bad ones. That's why the software requires that the disks must be already plugged before you use it. "However, the user needs to make sure the target device is first plugged in ". It cant "talk" directly with the controller and needs windows to do the "dirty work".

What those types of low-level format software do, is writing zeros to all the physical sectors of a hard disk which is different than low-level format. That does help in maybe tracking bad sectors or wiping a hard disk from any data in case you want to sell it. If you have an SSD that doesn't have TRIM support (mainly 4 years and older SSD) Zero-filling an SSD was a trick used to improve write performance. SSD can write data quickly only to a blank (zero-filled) block. If your SSD supports TRIM then there is no need for this at all. if anything it can wear down your disk a bit.

So in short, programs that do "low-level format" only work on old SSD (no trim) to help speed up every once in a while, and "spinners" if you want to detect for bad sectors and replace (not repair) with healthy spare ones if the HDD can do that as well as wiping the data completely from an HDD.

Again don't mean that @Mirkec post is bad or anything, its the company that misleads a bit its customers as to what it actually does.

Hope it helped.
