This info was written to help those who are newer to the file sharing scene, or for the users of uTorrent, suffering issues under Windows 10
Peer-to-peer file sharing is an excellent way to download any file easy and fast.
uTorrent (BitTorrent, qBittorent, Transmission, Deluge, BiglyBT, and other clones) is an essential app for downloading your favorite media like movies, music albums, software, etc.
uTorrent is one of the world’s most used software that eases the downloading and distributing of large amounts of files.
Its convenience is coupled with the fact that you don’t need to worry about link breakdowns or having to wait to shut down your machine until all downloads are complete.
These characteristics and many others make uTorrent a favorite among over 150 million monthly users.
As soon as your internet connection is back up, uTorrent, which relies on peer-to-peer sharing, resumes the download process from wherever it stopped or was interrupted.
A couple of notes, before using torrents of any kind:

It is highly recommended to secure your personal info while downloading uTorrent files, such as using a good VPN for hiding your IP address. (which is a whole another article). This is especially important if you are downloading copyright protected files.
Also, make sure you use a good anti-virus software (or a couple).
In this day and age, the use of anti-virus software is almost a must. We have malicious actors all over the globe that enjoy making life miserable for people. Personally I do not understand these people, since they don't even know the results of their creation, most of the time, unless it is designed to be a carrier for a intrusion payload of some kind. Even if you trust the source it is better to have it, then to be sorry, because your source could have gotten something nasty from somewhere else.
Each anti-virus has it good points, and some bad points, such as not catching all virus/malware threats, or slow updates, which is why it is good to have more then one installed (BUT ONLY ONE running resident) so as to have multiple layers of protection. You let the resident program do the initial scanning, then follow up w/ an individual scan of suspect file(s) with a manual scan using your other anti-virus/malware software of choice.
As nice as peer-to-peer software is, there are some annoying problems with using them under Windows 10:

Recently, I have heard some complaints about uTorrent not responding under Windows 10, especially after upgrading from Win 7 or 8.
Below is a few troubleshooting issues and solutions to resolve some of the more common problems.
1. Make sure you anti-virus is not throttling, or massacring your torrent client.
2. Change security settings
3. Change the copy of the torrent
4. Modify uTorrent associations, so it will handle torrents.
5. Change uTorrent settings.

Problem: System cannot find path uTorrent error in Windows 10
“System cannot find path” error message in uTorrent can be quite frustrating, but can be easily fixed by using one of the following solutions.
1 – Make sure that the file path is less than 256 characters
2 – Check for space or dot characters
3 – Delete the torrent file and all files associated with it
4 - Restart uTorrent
5 – Make sure that the destination folder isn’t set to Read-only

Are you dealing with an unresponsive Download folder?
Long story short, when this folder is not responding, File Explorer might stop working as well.
Your immediate intervention is required, or it can be big problems for you system (can anyone say CRASH)!!!
The Downloads directory stores files that you download with browsers, and some other programs.
However, an unresponsive Download folder can take ages to open. Some users have stated that they can’t open Downloads at all.
When that folder is not responding, File Explorer might then stop working.
This is how you can fix an unresponsive Downloads folder that takes a while to open, or doesn’t open at all.
I) Run a System File Scan
II) Delete files in Downloads
III) Optimize the Downloads folder for General items
An unresponsive Downloads folder is often due to Automatic Folder Type Discovery that automatically optimizes directories for specific file types.
Folder Discovery is great for the Videos, Pictures and Music folders that include one very specific file type.
However, it doesn’t work so well for the Downloads directory that includes more variable files.
Thus, Folder Discovery can be more of a pain that considerably slows down the Downloads folder’s load time.
Unfortunately, File Explorer doesn’t include an option to switch off Folder Discovery.
However, you can still adjust what files it optimizes the Downloads directory for.
Optimizing Downloads for GENERAL items might fix that folder.
This is how you can adjust the Folder Discovery settings.
1 - Press the File Explorer button on the Windows 10 taskbar.
2 - Right-click your Downloads directory and select Properties.
3 - Select the Customize tab
4 - Select General items from the drop-down menu.
5 - Then click the Also apply this template to all subfolders checkbox.
6 - Select the Apply option, and click OK to close the window.

Recently, I have heard some complaints about uTorrent not responding under Windows 10, especially after upgrading from Win 7 or 8.
Below is a few troubleshooting issues and solutions to resolve some of the more common problems.
1. Make sure you anti-virus is not throttling, or massacring your torrent client.
Some anti-virus makers do not like torrent clients, such as uTorrent, liking them to malware or PuPs (Potentuially unwanted Programs), do to both the potential for spreading virus/malware, and potential copyright problems. So, as such, they do variety of weird things to them, from preventing them from running to suspending them in memory.
To check for this problem, temporarily turn off your anti-virus program, and attempt to run the torrent client.
If you have no problems, then add an exception to your anti-virus program
DON'T forget to turn your anti-virus program back on, after you preform this test!!
--------------------2. Change security settings
2.1. Disable or uninstall firewall
One solution to fixing uTorrent not responding is to disable the firewall and reboot your computer.
In case you already have a strong antivirus then you need to uninstall unnecessary firewall software that usually causes uTorrent to crash regularly. The problem might be caused by tool such as V-Com System Suite, Norman Personal Firewall, NVIDIA Firewall or Cybersitter, just to name of a few of the more intrusive ones.
2.2. Adjust antivirus settings
For those who have Avast antivirus, you need to disable the P2P shield feature, in order to enjoy your uTorrent download sessions.
The Spyware Doctor 5 tool usually causes uTorrent to freeze during the installation process.
To solve this issue you can uninstall it and choose an antivirus that doesn’t interfere with uTorrent, such as Vipre Anti-virus.
If you are using an antimalware software like Outpost Pro, you need to exclude uTorrent from its rules in order to fix the issue.
-----------------3. Change the copy of the torrent
There are instances when you may encounter that uTorrent is stuck at a certain percent of the download process, and will not proceed, despite sitting there for days. A problem like that is caused by the fact that your copy of the torrent is incomplete, unavailable or it lacks seeders. In this case you might need to get another version of the file you want to download.
--------------------4. Modify uTorrent associations, so it will handle torrents.
- Open uTorrent, got to Options.
- Open Preferences, choose General.
- Click Associate with torrent files.
5. Change uTorrent settings.
Windows, especially since Windows 8, has place increasing levels of protections on what programs can do, and where it can store information, and what information it has access to. This is not really a bad thing, normally, since it restricts access to various places on your system, so things like virui, ransomware, etc have a more difficult time messing up your system. But this can also prevent some programs from operating like they are suppose to, since they are trying to save/change information they do not own. So unless you like the idea of running programs as Administrator (which has access to the entire system, with little protections), for using compatibility settings like Windows 7 or XP (which again open system for access, just short of administrator rights), you need to change where uTorrent save files, such as in the %appdata% folder.
The %appdata% folder is created in each users profile, under their User directory (i.e. User Roberta's profile is created in C:\Users\Roberta, and all information specifically associated with Roberta is stored there). The directory AppData is a shorten name for Application Data, and normally is a hidden directory users do not see, without changing some of the file explorer settings. It has 3 sub directories normally: Local, LocalLow, and Roaming. By adding an additional directory there, programs you run, under you user profile, and store information in this folders, with a lot less restrictions than on the rest of the system.
So, that being said, many problem with programs not running correctly, can be traced back to lack of system rights, and unable to read/write files.
- Press Windows+R to open Run.
- Type %appdata%uTorrent.
- Press Enter.
This will create a new folder in the appdata directory, in prep for changing where uTorrent stores information.
- Uninstall uTorrent
- ReInstall uTorrent, from the official source (this applies to the various torrent clone too, BitTorrent,
(unless you are more system savvy, and can move all the information yourself to the new locations)
- Access the Preferences, under the Options menu,
- then select the Directories entry,
- and change the download locations for torrents to the newly created folder.
i.e Put new downloads in: %appdata%uTorren\Incomplete
Move completed downloads to: %appdata%\uTorrent\Completed
Store .torrents in: %appdata%\uTorrent\Torrents
NOTE: If using the system variable %appdata% does not work on your system, you will have to replace it withC:\User\<your user name\AppData\

Windows has a limitation for file paths of 256 characters, and if you exceed this limit you’ll usually get a “System cannot find path” error. To fix this problem, be sure that a file name and download location of your torrent don’t exceed 256 characters. Bear in mind that file path includes both the location of the download folder and the name of the torrent file, so be sure that path doesn’t exceed 256 character limit.
----------------------2 – Check for space or dot characters
Sometimes uTorrent can change the download path of your torrents by adding a dot or an empty space. Usually the dot character will be added at the beginning or at the end of a folder or a torrent file thus making it unreadable. To fix this error be sure that the path to your torrent file doesn’t contain any dots before or after the folder or file name.
Sometimes space character can be added at the end of the destination folder as well, so be sure to check the file path for any unexpected space characters.
-------------------3 – Delete the torrent file and all files associated with it
Sometimes in order to fix “System cannot find path” error on uTorrent you have to delete all files associated with that torrent. After deleting all the files, be sure to download the same torrent again and check if the problem is fixed. According to users, this error occurs due to incorrectly downloaded torrent file, so deleting the torrent and downloading it again usually fixes this issue.
--------------------4 - Restart uTorrent
Sometimes the simplest solution is usually the best, and users reported that they managed to fix “System cannot find path” error on uTorrent simply by turning off the application and staring it again. This might not be the permanent solution, but it’s worth checking out.
----------------------------5 – Make sure that the destination folder isn’t set to Read-only
If your destination folder is set to Read-only you won’t be able to make any changes and create any new files in it, so we strongly suggest that you check the folder’s properties. To do that, do the following:
- Find your download folder, right click it and choose Properties from the menu.
- Once the Properties window opens, go to the Attributes section and make sure that Read-only option isn’t checked.
- If it is, uncheck it, Click Apply and OK to save changes.
6 – Manually set the download path
You can also easily fix this problem by setting the download location for each individual torrent. To do that follow these simple steps:
- In uTorrent find the torrent that is giving you this error.
- Right-click the problematic torrent and
- Choose Advanced > Set Download Location. and Select the download folder.
- Repeat these steps for all problematic torrents.
Alternatively, you can just set a global download folder for all torrents (see above under Change uTorrent settings)
-----------------------------7 – Revert to the older version
According to some forums I visit, a few users reported that this issue only occurs in the latest versions of uTorrent,
and according to them, after switching to the older version the issue was permanently fixed.
This is one of the simplest\r solutions, so be sure to try it a try.
------------------------------8 - Check for drive letter changes
Sometimes the drive letter can change in the destination path (such as when using removable drives, or external drives) in uTorrent,
so before starting the download be sure to double check it.
If the letter is changed to nonexistent drive letter you won’t be able to store your torrent to that location.
====================================Problem: ”Write to disk: Access Denied” error with uTorrent
What causes this error? The answer, as previously mentioned above (Change uTorrent Settings), is permissions.
The quickest way to solve this problem is just by running the application as an administrator.
As I mentioned before, I am not a great fan of doing this, it gets the job done the fastest, just be aware of the potential problems associated with giving a program free run of your system.
That being said, follow the instructions below to overcome the above-mentioned error in just a few easy steps:
- Right-click the uTorrent shortcut on the desktop.
- Open Compatibility tab.
- Check the ”Run as Administrator” box.
- Click Apply.
- Confirm selection and look for changes.
- Click OK.
If the problem is persistent, you can try some of these other steps:
- Check HDD health: Use ChkDsk from and administrator cmd prompt,
- or Right-Click on the drive in the File Explorer, and select the Tools tabs, then click on Check
- Make sure that your download location is properly set (see 8-Check for drive letter changes, above).
You might have set the download location to an external drive.
- Delete uTorrent update files.
You can do so by navigating to C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent, and deleting updates.dat.
Lastly, If you’re still having problems with the ”Write to disk: Access Denied” error on uTorrent, make sure to reinstall the client and give it another go.
==============================Problem: Error files missing from job error in uTorrent
Sometimes, torrent seeding can be abruptly stopped, which is followed by the error that says Files Missing from Job. Please Recheck.
Usually the most likely cause is you either moved files from the download folder, renamed the file, or the files were deleted.
Peer-to-peer file transfer relies on stable grounds which implies that people who download a certain file, will share it with others.
And there’s a known, unspoken agreement between the internet compatriots, Do not hit and run.
No one likes leechers, and it’s very important to seed in order to repay your debt.
Even though you won’t have any repercussions if you decide not to seed after the download ends.
Luckily, most users decide to spend extra mileage and increase the download speed for those who fancy downloading the same file.
Kudos to them!
However, sometimes seeding can be abruptly stopped, which is followed by the error that says "Files Missing from Job. Please Recheck."
It’s not hard to guess why this error appears in the first place.
These are the likely scenarios that caused the error:
- You moved files from the download folder.
- You renamed files.
- Files are deleted.
If the uTorrent client is active, you won’t be able to do any of the above-mentioned operations, but if you closed it in the meanwhile, there’s a chance you were able to rename, delete or move files to another directory.
And, logically, if that’s the case, uTorrent can’t reach them and continue with seeding.
Because of that, make sure to transfer back all moved files, restore them from the Recycle Bin, or restore the original name,
in order for the client to recognize them and continue with seeding.
In addition, if the client is still unable to recognize them, right-click the troubled file under the uTorrent‘s download list, and click Force Re-check.
===========================Problem: My Download folder is not responding on Windows 10

1 - Open the SFC utility by pressing the Windows key + X hotkey and selecting Command Prompt (Admin) on the menu.
2 - Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter, BEFORE you initiate an SFC scan.
3 - Then enter sfc /scannow in the Command Prompt, and press the Enter key.
The scan will probably take up to half an hour.
4 - Restart Windows after the scan if WRP does repair corrupted files.
---------------------II) Delete files in Downloads
Folders open more slowly when they include lots of files. Some (corrupted) files in Downloads might even crash Explorer when you try to open the folder.
Thus, deleting files from Downloads will certainly speed up that directory and might even fix it if it isn’t opening.
Using some tools like Cyber-D’s Autodelete (use google to find it) program can automate this process for you,
and automatically delete file based on various filters, such as, by date: files older then 30 days; or Name: *.torrent.

You can configure File Explorer to show icons only.
- Open File Explorer'
- Select the Download directory or library
- Select the View tab
- Click on the Options in the ribbion, then select Change Folder and Search Options
- From the new pop up menu, select View tab
- Under the Files and Folders section, check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
- Click "Apply to Folders"
- in the pop up window "Files View" - "Do you want all folders of this type to match this folder's view settings?" select NO
-------------------------Disable Automatic Folder Type Discovery
As mentioned, you can’t turn off Automatic Folder Type Discovery with a File Explorer option.
However, with one of the many Windows tweaker program, such as, Winaero Tweaker (use Google search),
the customization software does include a Disable automatic folder type discovery setting.
Otherwise, you will have to do some registry editing (which is beyond the scope of this help).
Thus, you can select that option to ensure Folder Discovery no longer slows down the Downloads directory.
