Hello, I was wondering if anyone with a fingerprint reader on their laptop has a similar issue with the latest update from Windows.

Computer: Asus UX 550 GE
Hardware/Driver: Goodix Fingerprint Reader 1.0.0.1800
Genuine copy of Windows with limited tweaks like print spooler disabled.

Had similar problem with HP! For me worked this way
1. Uninstall/disable fingerprint and drivers ... /as s/w in programs and h/w in device manager/
2. Restart computer
3. Install software then in device manager /if not shown/ , "Scan for h/w changes"

Hope it help to solve problem!

First,
you can uninstall the latest updates or try system restore prior to the Windows update.

- Download and reinstall the drivers from your manufacturer website
- Disconnect Access Work or School accounts if it is still not working after updating drivers
- Restart device

Yup did that already with no results unfortunately.

Well, it's not disabled for sure. I can't find anything in services.msc with a literal biometric name. Windows is able to detect that i have a fingerprint reader as it still recommends and allows me to set it up. The problem is during set up. It asks me to put my finger but for some reason it's not reading it.

If you are applying tweaks, best to disable updates for stability.

An in-place upgrade would be required to fix your system and then setup Biometrics services again.

May you elaborate on what an in-place upgrade is? Also I never disabled biometrics though. It was working well until the recent forced update.

In-place upgrade will restore your Windows settings to default values
No personal files will be affected by the repair process
Some of your customized Windows settings may be lost through this process

After you perform In-place upgrade,
you will have to apply your previous tweaks after confirming the Biometrics are working again or not
Disable Windows updates since you are applying tweaks to maintain stability.

This is the step for in-place upgrade
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-perform-an-in-place-upgrade-with-windows-10/7f0b236e-3c6c-4913-9691-c4baa2a6190a

In-place for Windows 10 and 11 are basically the same

Well sh&%*
I was able to enable the biometric service per your guide but for some reason I can't recover, which I tried to do earlier on. I was merely confused by your wording "in-place upgrade."
Unfortunately, for some inane reason I am unable to see the reversion for the latest update. Attached is what I see. Thanks for the help btw. Microsoft support takes like weeks to respond/give me a random link for a generic fix.

For now I was able to revert using the control panel recovery instead of system settings recovery (since it didn't appear). My FP reader works for now but I'm afraid it will stop working during the next forced update. This really blows tbh. I can't even install Linux or use some of the mod OSes here because a lot of the software on my computer is pretty niche so my touchscreen and fp reader will stop working as well as my keyboard. Asus is my love/hate relationship for sure.

fun side note: for some reason my touchpad/cursor stopped working as well lmao.

Kindly use the EDIT button, to edit your replies to avoid multiple posts.

Since it working now, it should be best to disable updates entirely since this what caused the stability issues.

Custom mods have services or features that were removed hence your apps may not work with it.
And for your case, it would be best to disable updates entirely.
My recommendation would be to use stop updates or install Windows 10 / 11 LTSC if your system allows it.

That's the thing though. I am not using a custom mod. I'm using a genuine version. Originally this computer came with 10 but was one of the ones that was upgraded to windows 11. My SD reader sometimes works and sometimes doesn't but aside from that minor issue, everything else was working. The services I disabled (as attached in previous posts) should not have messed with anything. All in all, this was a bad experience and I am pausing updates for the time being. Again, thanks for the help.

Provide me your hardware details and i'll look it up for you. Screenshot will do.

Press Windows + R
Type MSINFO32 and press Enter key

OS Name:
OS Build:
System Manufacturer:
System Model:
Baseboard Product:

As such symptoms indicates your device might not have full driver support for Windows 11 due to missing drivers.
In this case, contact ASUS technical support for driver issues in Windows 11.

You can stay in Windows 10 for stability and see if you still encounter issues with future updates.

Here ya go. I was fine with Win10. It forced updated to Win11 and it was fine until now. Hopefully I don't have to reinstall because I'll have to do a migration of 200 GB of data (which isn't a lot per se but the time it will take is not desirable).

Your model does have full Windows 11 driver support
https://www.asus.com/supportonly/ux580ge/helpdesk_download/

Check Windows update if there are optional updates that needs to be installed other than installing Win11 23H2
You can contact ASUS Technical Support with regards to driver issues since In-place upgrade has failed.

If all else fails
- go back to Windows 10 for stability via Reset this PC keep files as the last option
- Then reinstall the drivers
- Update to Windows 10 22H2, then Disable updates
- Click on Stay on Windows 10 for now if you get upgrade to Win11 prompt

If Forced upgrade to Win11, Go to Windows update
- only works for 10 Days since you were upgraded to Windows 11
- Go back to Windows 10 feature works up to 30 days maximum from date of forced upgrade
- Click on Stay on Windows 10 for now and it will downgrade to Windows 10
