Difference Between Windows 10 Home, Pro, Enterprise, VL, N Editions

htwindows10freshupgrade.jpg

Microsoft releases multiple editions of its Operating Systems like Windows 10. Sometimes it can be quite confusing to check which edition or version suits our needs. In this article, we will discuss about different editions of Windows 10 and know what is Pro, VL and N editions.

Let’s discuss each edition one by one so that we can understand the difference among all these Windows 10 editions.

Windows-10-editions-comparison-670x366.jpg

Windows 10 Home
Windows 10 Home mostly comes pre-installed in the laptops you buy. It contains all the major features included in Windows 10 like Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Continuum, universal apps etc. The things missing are mostly related to networking. The home edition can’t be joined in a domain and it does not include group policy editor. But you can install group policy editor separately in Windows 10. If you are going to use Windows 10 on your home computer, Windows 10 Home is suitable for you. Other features not included in Windows 10 Home are Bitlocker, Enterprise Mode IE, Remote Desktop and Client Hyper-V.

Windows 10 Pro
Windows 10 Professional edition is mostly used in Office environments where joining a Windows Server domain is required. Windows 10 Pro comes with all the features of Windows 10 Home and features like Group Policy Management, Bitlocker encryption, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V, Azure Active Directory join ability, enterprise data protection, Windows Update for business etc.

Windows 10 Enterprise

Windows 10 Enterprise edition includes all the features of Windows 10 Pro plus additional features like Direct Access, Windows To Go creator, AppLocker, BranchCache, Start Screen control with Group Policy, credential guard, device guard etc.

Windows 10 Mobile
Windows 10 Mobile is designed for smartphones and tablets and includes basic consumer features including Continuum capability.

What does VL stand for?

You will see Windows 10 Enterprise VL editions. VL stands for Volume License. This means that a single license key can be used to activate multiple installations of Windows 10. This is usually used by large enterprises.

N and KN editions

Windows 10 N editions are specifically designed for Europe and Switzerland to comply with the European law. The N stands for Not with Media Player and does not come with Windows Media Player pre-installed.

KN is specially designed for Korean market and does not include Windows Media Player (WMP) and an instant messenger.

Hopefully this gives a brief comparison of all the Windows 10 editions. Wikipedia gives a very good comparison chart and for full detailed comparison, you can read the .

Upcoming: Windows 10 S:

Windows 10 S is a specific configuration of Windows 10 Pro that offers a familiar, productive Windows experience that’s streamlined for security and performance. By exclusively using apps in the Windows Store and ensuring that you browse safely with Microsoft Edge, Windows 10 S keeps you running fast and secure day in and day out.

WDoes the extra Virus protection cause issue for KMS Medicines etc. Or Adobe downloads? With enterprise is ther still a need for a separate ant-virus? Do any Windows 10 editions have a good easily configurable firewall?
Thanks for the time you take out of your day to answer questions like mine! You guys are the Best! TEAM OS rules!
Defender is a very good antivirus for 70-80% of users. It's true that, being so good, it gives rise to some problems for the remaining 20-30%, who are looking for a more applied or customized version for their needs, because if they didn't detect patches, keygens and other things like that, then it would not be a good antivirus. And then you have to sit and set exclusions for files, folders, etc.
Anyway, it's a personal opinion, for me Defender works very well, others may have a different opinion, and there is no point in going into an antivirus war.
With the firewall it is also a matter of choice, it does its job, especially if you know how to use / configure it.
Both are ok for the average Joe, but there are plenty of other choices if you're unhappy with one, or both.

OK, so now I am a little confused, Enterprise now has all the bells and whistles that pro has? It didn't use to, or am I thinking of the LTSC version of Enterprise? I installed the LTSC version of Enterprise a while back and there was no Cortana, for instance, mo big deal, but there were also a lot of other things that were not there and the only web browser it had was internet explorer. So... Just so I am clear is it the LTSC version that has all the differences?
Thanks so much for taking to time to read this and answer it. I Googled it but didn't see any comparisons of the two, I might have entered the search wrong though.
Peace,
BB☸
As part of the SAC channel (Semi-Annual Channel) , Microsoft releases new Windows 10 build twice a year (in spring and in autumn – these are the builds Windows 10 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, etc.). Is designed for those who want to get all the latest Windows features (Feature Updates) as soon as possible. Each new Windows edition in SAC is supported for 18 months only. It means that if your Windows version was released more than 18 months ago, it would not get any security updates or bug fixes. This is Windows 10 Pro.

Windows LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) version is a special Windows edition with the long-term support. In the Windows LTSC versions (earlier they were called LTSB – Long-Term Servicing Branch) Microsoft focuses on the system stability.

Windows 10 LTSC life-cycle is 10 years (5 years of the main lifetime and 5 years of extended support). It means that Microsoft will support Windows 10 1809 till 2028. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC gets 5 more years of extended support only if your company takes part in the Software Assurance program.
At the same time in the support period this Windows version gets only the security updates and patches to fix certain bugs. Meanwhile, Windows functionality will not get any changes. Microsoft updates Windows 10 LTSB/LTSC build every two or three years (and the user decides if they want to upgrade to the next long-term build, i. e. the OS is not upgraded automatically). Today the latest LTSC version is based on Windows 10 1809 (the previous LTSB version was based on Windows 10 1607).

In Windows 10 LTSC 2019, unlike Windows 10 1809 from the Semi-Annual Channel (which it is based on), there are no these features in the operation system:
Edge browser.
Microsoft Store.
Preinstalled UWP apps (apps from Microsoft Store, both official and third-party ones). Even a Photo Viewer must be enabled manually.
OneDrive.
Virtual assistant Cortana.
Windows Ink Workspace, a digital pen.
There is no hardware support for VP9/HEVC ( used on YouTube, encrypted video streams – Netflix, Amazon Video, etc.).
Windows 10 LTSC Start Menu is empty – you won’t see any icons of preinstalled apps.

Due to the absence of unnecessary UWP apps, you don’t need to update them (the system downloads and installs only critical security updates), and there are less active processes number in the Task Manager. This is why Windows 10 LTSC may be installed on old models of PCs or laptops with 2 (or even 1!) GB of RAM. It also takes up less disk space.
Since Windows 10 LTSC is based on the Enterprise edition, there is a set of all necessary software and features to be used in corporate networks (Windows To Go, AppLocker, Local Group Policy Editor -gpedit.msc, you can join this Windows edition to the Active Directory domain, integrated Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) support and User Environment Virtualization (UE-V), Device Guard and Creditendial Guard, DirectAccess, Branch Cache, advanced telemetry management options, etc.).

So, to translate, LTSC is an Enterprise-, or Enterprise is an Enterprise LTSC+.
In my mind, LTSC is the most Windows 7 of the Windows 10 editions, but here too it is a matter of interpretation ... :)

Actually, N is like a non-bloated version. It comes without some Windows apps that normally would come with.
