Review
BleachBit quickly frees disk space and tirelessly guards user privacy. Free cache, delete cookies, clear Internet history, shred temporary files, remove logs, and discard junk users did not know was there. Designed for Linux and Windows systems, it wipes clean a thousand applications, including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, and more. Beyond simply deleting files, BleachBit includes advanced features such as shredding files to prevent recovery, wiping free disk space to hide traces of files deleted by other applications, and vacuuming Firefox to make it faster. Better than free, BleachBit is open-source.

BleachBit can import CCleaner's winapp2 file, making it sufficient a drop-in replacement.

Key features:

  • Simple operation: read the descriptions, check the boxes user want, click preview, and click delete;
  • Multi-platform: Linux and Windows;
  • Free of charge;
  • Free to share, learn, and modify (open source);
  • No adware, spyware, malware, or browser toolbars;
  • Translated to 61 languages;
  • Shred files to hide their contents and prevent data recovery;
  • Shred any file (such as a spreadsheet on your desktop);
  • Overwrite free disk space to hide previously deleted files;
  • Portable app for Windows: run without installation;
  • Command line interface for scripting and automation;
  • CleanerML allows anyone to write a new cleaner using XML;
  • Automatically import and update winapp2.ini cleaner files (a separate download) giving Windows users access to 1700+ additional cleaners;
  • Frequent software updates with new features.

What is new in version 4.0.0 (Released on April 19, 2020):
General changes:
  • The application was updated to run on Python 3 instead of Python 2;
  • Add cleaner for Discord;
  • Clean more of Google Chrome: IndexDB;
  • Clean more of Firefox: cookies, history;
  • Clean much more of Opera;
  • Clean much more of gPodder;
  • Improve the responsiveness of application window while cleaning;
  • Fix cleaning custom folders when overwrite open was enabled;
  • Fix cleaning VLC;
  • Fix the application window not appearing or disappearing;
  • Fix pop-up notification when cleaning is finished;
  • Fix copy button in the diagnostics window.

Specific to Windows:
  • Add optional Window 10 light and dark themes;
  • Fix: files were leftover after wiping a drive;
  • Update SQLite from 3.28 to 3.31.1;
  • Add translations for GTK stock messages such as OK and Cancel;
  • Re-introduce RPM package for CentOS 8;
  • Add cleaner names for Microsoft Edge in Winapp2.ini;
  • Fix: all native cleaners were missing in portable mode after downloading Winapp2.ini.

What is new in version 3.9.2 Beta (Released on April 12, 2020):
  • The application starts without crashing;
  • After wiping free space, verify there are no files with random names left behind (issue 502);
  • Run a cleaning operation that takes a few seconds. Minimize the BleachBit window until it is done. Verify there is a pop-up notification that it finished (issue 822);
  • Set the Windows language to user favorite non-English language, and start BleachBit. If the language is one of ~60 supported languages, the GTK message should be translated. The GTK messages are distinct from BleachBit's messages. The GTK languages are basic messages such as OK, open, close, cancel, and delete (issue 429);
  • In the preferences, enable overwriting files. Then delete some files, and there should not be an error (PR 832);
  • In the tree view showing the list of cleaners, the arrows should not be missing (issue 853);
  • In the preferences, enable updates for Winapp2.ini. In the list of cleaners, you should see Microsoft Edge instead of numbers 3005 and 3006;
  • Enable the Windows 10 theme and then enable the dark theme. Try all four combinations of themes.

What is new in version 3.9.0 Beta (Released on March 23, 2020):
  • Test the whole application for regressions related to major changes "under the hood";
  • Run a cleaning operation that takes at least 10 seconds. Before it is done, minimize the BleachBit window, and wait. Verify there is a pop-up notification that it finished;
  • While wiping free space, manipulate the BleachBit application window by resizing and/or moving it. Verify it response within two seconds;
  • In the preferences, add a custom folder to be cleaned, and verify it was added. Add some files (that you won't mind losing) to the folder. Still, in the preferences, enable overwriting files. Then run the cleaner for custom folders (under system), and verify the files in the folder are now gone and that the folder was not renamed to a random name;
  • Test the updated and overhauled cleaner for gPodder;
  • Test the new Discord cleaner;
  • Test Google Chrome: cookies;
  • Test Firefox: cookies, history;
  • Test Opera cleaner in general.

Windows only:
  • In the preferences, switch to the Windows 10 theme and back. Verify the change in appearance happens instantly;
  • Use the application menu to select a folder to be shredded, and verify it previews or deletes;
  • Test Unicode in various ways, including running BleachBit while logged in under a username with Unicode characters, add Unicode paths to the custom files or folders to be cleaned, run BleachBit while the operating system is set to a non-English character set. See also encoding issues targeted for this release.
