Windows Sandbox No Internet connection problem [Fix]

sandobox1.png

Windows Sandbox allows you to do almost anything. You can try incomplete-looking programs and websites or play with the operating system settings without worrying about breaking things. But whenever you have managed to activate Windows Sandbox, you may encounter a problem in which you do not have access to the Internet within the virtual configuration.

Typically, that problem occurs due to a variety of factors ranging from technical failures, virtual private networks to antivirus firewalls.

Note: Make sure you have the latest updates for Windows 10 installed before continuing - type ‘windows update" on the Start menu, click Open and then click Check for updates.

Rehabilitate Sandbox

Windows Sandbox is a new addition to Windows 10, so it is extremely susceptible to errors and failures. Disabling and re-enabling the function will probably help you connect to the Internet successfully.

Start by opening the Windows Features dialog box. For that, you must type windows functions in the Start menu and then click Open.

Verify that the boxes are checked next to the following features as listed below and then click OK:
• Windows isolated space (in other versions you will see it as "Windows Sandbox")
• Containers Platform Hyper-V Virtual Machine Platform.

Once your computer finishes activating these functions, restart it and then try Windows Sanbox as administrator.

Do you connect to the internet now? Continue if you do not.

Bridge network connections (This was what worked for me)

Bypassing both networks used by Windows Sandbox and the host operating system is the next step you must take to solve the problem. That allows better communication between networks. It is something you should definitely do.

Step 1: Click on the Wi-Fi or Ethernet icon on the Windows 10 host taskbar and then click on Network and Internet Settings.

Step 2: In the Status Settings dialog that appears, click Change adapter options.

Step 3: Hold down the Ctrl key and then select the host network connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet, whichever is active) and the Ethernet Virtual Network v-Ethernet Hyper-V network.

Finally, launch Windows Sandbox and verify if you connect to the Internet successfully.

NOTE: This solution worked for me, but before this I added a "allow Windows Sandbox" rule in my Firewall.

Still not lucky?
Let's try the following.

Disable virtual private network

Is your computer connected to a VPN? The encryption protocols used by these networks are notorious for preventing Windows Sandbox from establishing an internet connection. If that is the case, you must disable it.

Step 1: Open the Host Notification Center and then click on the VPN tile.

sandbox7.png

Step 2: In the VPN Configuration window that appears, click Disconnect next to any active VPN connection. If your VPN has a dedicated applet, you can also use it to disconnect it.

You should probably establish an Internet connection. Once you're done, you can re-enable the VPN connection on the host: Windows Sandbox will still have access to the internet.

Disable antivirus firewall

Another main reason why Windows Sandbox may fail to connect to the Internet due to third-party antivirus firewalls. If your computer has one, try to disable it.

sandbox9.png

If you use Norton Security, for example, right-click the Norton Security icon in the taskbar and then click Disable Smart Firewall. Then, launch Windows Sandbox: it is most likely to connect to the Internet.

Warning: Disabling the firewall can leave your computer exposed to security threats. Therefore, enable it as soon as possible or add the Windows Sandbox as an exception.

Add firewall exception
sandbox_TICK.png

Did you disable the firewall? To avoid repeating the same thing every time you want to use Windows Sandbox (and to stop leaving your computer unprotected) consider adding Windows Sandbox as an exception to the antivirus application's firewall.

Using Norton Security as an example, access the antivirus application Settings panel, click on Firewall and then add the following path in Program Control:

Code:
C:\Windows\System32\WindowsSandbox.exe

sandbox10.png

If that doesn't seem to work, you can also try adding the MAC address of the network connection used by Windows Sandbox as an exception. Use the following steps to do that.

Step 1: Launch Windows Sandbox, click on the globe-shaped icon on the taskbar and then click on Network and Internet Settings.

sandbox11.png

Step 2: In the window that appears, click View the properties of your network.

sandbox12.png

Step 3: Note down the MAC address of the network connection listed next to Physical address (MAC). Exit the Windows Sandbox later.

sandbox13.png

Step 4: Once again, taking Norton Security as an example, access the Firewall administration screen, click General Settings and then click Configure (+) next to Device Trust.

sandbox14.png

Step 5: Click the Add button and then add the MAC address of the Windows Sandbox and set the Trust Level to Full Trust.

sandbox15.png

Remember that, apart from finding the MAC address of the Windows Sandbox Network Connection, the process of adding it to the firewall will be different for each antivirus application that exists. Consult your antivirus application documentation for specific instructions.

AVAST firewall configuration

If you use Avast Premium or any other version that has a built-in Firewall, you must configure "internet sharing". Go to Protection / Firewall / Settings and check the "Internet Connection Sharing mode" box

Disable and then Enable Windows Sandbox

If none of the above has worked for you, try disabling Windows Sandbox, restart PC and then enable it again, restart PC.
This has worked for me with Windows 10 Pro 2004 latest version.

Hopefully, the previous fixes worked and you are now connected to the Internet. Microsoft will probably fix the various errors related to Windows Sandbox, so don't forget to save Windows 10 a day. Now, it's time to waste your time with the Windows Sandbox, so feel free to do whatever you want inside it.
