Hello to all :)

Problem: weekly backup...i copy files from data drive of laptop to external HD. During copy some error tells me that some path are too long. But i need long paths...i can't short them.

Question 1: is there a way to bypass this problem without the use of a tool? Can i "extend" this windows limit?
Question 2: why this stupid limit exists in 2018? I think is really really stupid! Don't you think?

Thank you for replies :)

I write the procedure, if the link will change or will not work.

OPTION 1: Registry

1) Run (or win+R) -> type "regedit" -> ENTER
2) go to path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
3) on the right side search "LongPathsEnabled"
3a) if "LongPathsEnabled" doesn't exixt, right click on "FileSystem" -> New -> DWORD (32-bit) and name it "LongPathsEnabled"
4) double click on "LongPathsEnabled" and set the value to "1"
5) OK and restart.

OPTION 2: Group Policy

1) Run (or win+R) -> type "gpedit.msc" -> ENTER
2) go to path Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Filesystem
3) on the right side find “Enable win32 long paths” and double.click it
4) Set to enabled -> OK
5) Exit from GPedit and restart.

NOTE

I don't check if it works or not. Tommorrow i'll test it and post results.

Sigh, this solution doesn't work in win10.Lite.V3 by WhiteDeath.
Next days i'll try it in win10.Lite.V6.

just use shorter names and it would be ok!
256 character should be enough for 99% of the population.
use names like: bckp01, bckp02... etc..
or you can use some software made for backups, not just copy/paste... acronis backup... etc...
