Areas to save disk space
----------------------------------
- Turn off or decrease size of disk usage for system restore
If your not using the Windows System Restore feature, then why have it enabled?
If you are using it, perhaps you want to re-evaluate how much disk space its using up (which can be several GigaBytes) for saving checkpoints. If you only want to have 1 or 2 good saved checkpoints to restore from decrease the allocated space for system restore to a few hundred meg.

- Decrease the disk usage size of the recycle bin
The most common area on a users PC in which Windows allocates a chuck of space for itself is the recycle bin. If you rather have files be deleted instantly and not put in the recycle bin or you want to decrease the space it uses to hold deleted files

- Empty or Decrease your Web Browsers disk usage for Cached files
Every web browser has a preferences or options area to adjust the temporary internet files and cache usage. In this video tutorial we use Internet Explorer as an example on how to save space with an adjustment of the temporary internet files space it uses.

- Disable Hibernation in Windows.
If you don't know what Hibernation is , chances are you aren't using it. You might want to disable it to save a few Gigabytes of space that function requires as shown in the video tutorial.
For Vista users you can open command prompt and type powercfg -H off

-Run the Windows Clean Manager
Windows comes already with a built in cleaner that does simple basic tasks to free up disk space.
To access it click start -> Run -> type cleanmgr -> press OK

you can set data-compression on windows partition it would compress your datas 1:1,7 and safe a lot of memory , on HDD you could improve data read/write with a fast CPU too

If Data Compression for old files are enabled, you need to be extra careful that the "erase compressed data" option in the Disk-cleanup is unchecked. Or else you might end up wondering where your old files have disappeared to... Enabling color-code for compressed data also helps in identifying the least used files and folders, which you may keep a hard backup and therefore remove from the HDD and save space.

Also, I saw in an earlier reply about disabling Virtual Memory. Disabling it might not be a good idea. Instead you could chose to set the virtual memory range for a particular drive to 256-4096 MB. This means only 256MB is permanently reserved for the VM. The system will use 4GB for VM, only if there is that much free-memory accessible to it.

hiberfile.sys is used for Windows 8 and 8< fastboot. Unless someone is dual booting, hibernation should not be disabled

also turn off your VIRTUAL MEMORY

only if you have enough RAM! some applications need at least 128-256MB of RAM to work correctly - i remember that some applications wouldn't start with "VM" disabled!
older computers with small amount of RAM just can't do it without "VM"!

If you do the recycle bin change and have external drives don't forget to do it again when you plug them in.

Bad idea for the general public to disable system restore. How many restore points to save is a different question. Don't turn it off.
