How to eradicate Metro from your Windows 8.1 PC

You’ll need to right-click the desktop Taskbar, select Properties, and then open the Navigation tab in the window that appears.

taskbar-menu-100058190-large.png

Unchecking the options in the “Corner navigation” portion of the tab disables the “hot corner” functionality for the upper edges of your
screen. Note that you’ll want to leave the upper-left hot corner enabled if you plan to use Windows 8.1’s App Switcher to fast-switch
between modern-style apps.

The really important, however, is in the “Start screen” options. “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead
of Start" is the option we’ve all been clamoring for: the ability to boot straight to the desktop. Check it now!

Now you have a decision to make.

Windows 8’s exiled Start button returns in Windows 8.1, but it’s missing a crucial component:
The Start menu. Instead, clicking it dumps you on the modern UI Start screen.

You’ll want to install a so-called Start button replacement program. PCWorld recently rounded up the best options available, and some
(like Stardock’s Start8) even let you disable all charms—something Windows 8.1 doesn’t allow.

Disable Metro UI And Get Windows 7 Styled Start Menu Back in Windows 8

  1. Type Win + R.
  2. Type REGEDIT in the Run dialog.

step-1.jpg

3. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

step-2.jpg

4. Double-Click on RPEnabled.

5. Type 0 in the Value data box

6. Click OK

7. Logoff and logon again.
Now Metro UI will be disabled and you will get the good old classic UI.
To get Metro UI back just type 1 instead of 0 in Step 4.

Great info Zorro48! This seems to be the best way to 'fix' win 8.1 but there is also an alternative. Installing "Classic Shell" has worked for me in getting back the Win 7 look and functionality that I prefer. If you haven't heard of it yet, check it out

I am going to post a few ways to speed up your windows operating system.

1] Goto System> Advanced system settings>Advanced>Performance 'Settings' > Visual Effects> And choose 'Adjust for best performance'
You can also mess with these settings to your preference.

2] Adjust your services by Going to run and type 'services.msc' for more info on this look at Black Vipers website for in-depth descriptions:

3] A] Goto run and type Msconfig>Boot>Click 'No GUI boot' change timeout to 3 seconds

B] Click 'Advanced options' and change # of processors to maximum.

I will post more when I have more time.
